Why Moms Are Always Missing From Family Photos

My mom lives in Germany.

One of the ways we stay connected is through a digital picture frame in her home. Every so often, I sit down and upload new photographs so she can watch our lives unfold from across the ocean.

As I scrolled through my camera roll, I found exactly what I expected.

The kids.

The dogs she adores.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

Then I stopped.

I was barely there.

There were a few quick selfies.

The same angle.

The same smile.

Proof that I had been there, but not the kind of photographs I imagined my children looking back on one day.

There is something strange about realizing you barely exist in your own family photographs.

A few weeks later, I found our Mother’s Day pictures.

My husband had taken them.

I’m grateful he picked up the camera because he wanted me in the frame with our children.

They documented the day.

But they weren’t the photographs I hoped our family would treasure years from now.

Even as a family photographer, I had quietly disappeared from my own family’s visual history.

When we started planning a trip to Turks & Caicos, I booked a family photographer almost immediately.

Not because I needed content.

I wanted photographs of all four of us together.

The kind where nobody had to hand the camera back after pressing the shutter.

The kind where, years from now, my children won’t have to wonder who was standing just outside the frame.

It turns out I wasn’t the only one.

During family sessions, moms say, “Wait, hold on. Let me get this one.”

Or they’ll ask if we can photograph the kids first.

They’re thinking about everyone else.

The snacks packed in every bag.

The extra outfit.

The sunscreen.

The water bottles.

The hundred little things that make family life work.

Somewhere along the way, they stop expecting to be part of the story.

The truth is, your children don’t see what you see when you look in the mirror.

They see home.

The version your children love already exists.

My mom’s digital frame still updates every week.

The dogs are still there.

The birthdays.

The vacations.

The ordinary Tuesday afternoons.

But every so often, there’s one of all four of us together.

Those are the ones that make me stop.
